poem for the week

painting: Deconstructing the Ballerina by Paula Rego

Movement
__
I want to see a ballerina
with hairy legs
and underarms;
a fat ballerina
with huge breasts;
a ballerina who wears dreadlocks
one who's old and grey
in ordinary clothes
I want to watch
a ballerina stumble
and laugh or pirhouette
in a wheelchair;
I want to see her
clasp another woman
and lift her high.
Then I will be
moved.

this week's poem sounds like a butch lesbian's soliloquy. the graphic helps in conveying the message. afflicting but yet compelling.

I loved it. It defies the concept of "normal" and "beautiful". As an artist, I must comment on the painting. It seems to relay the exact same message as the poem. Very Nice!
